“I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,” (Re 1:10)

Normally, the phrase, "the day of the Lord" speaks of His appearance the second time, a future event accompanied by terrible retribution meted out to the whole world.

But here and in 1Co 11:20, the word "Lord's" is one of simple possession. From apostolic times, "the Lord's day" meant the same as "the first day of the week". In other words, one fine Sunday, John was communing with the Lord when he received his vision.

One day in the week had been set aside especially for the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, he who died and rose again. This was new and distinct from the Jewish Sabbath, which had been part of what was abrogated by the introduction of the new pact. (Col. 2:14-17)

The concept of "day of rest" has suffered several mutations, such that nowadays we dare to take the day for ourselves. Can you believe it?

Read a little history about how our ancestors in the faith occupied their Sundays. Obviously, some fell into some extreme attitudes and customs. Nevertheless, guarding one whole day of the week to rest from normal daily routines in order to focus mind and heart on God and His Word brought benefits that many today do not attain.

I have some bad news. I have some good news: next Sunday is not yours.

We await you, like every Sunday, in the house of God. Precious few things exempt you from being here.

“built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood” (1Pe 2:5)
