Cultura de violación... Rape culture...

Proverbs 5:18-19 (RV1609)

Vice President Joe Biden's Open Letter to a Rape Victim

In his beautiful, open letter, Vice President Biden once again highlighted a problem that needs to remain in the spotlight. Rape and other forms of abuse are inexcusable… criminal.

But remember: this stuff is not indigenous to the United States. It happens where I live. It happens everywhere.

It is a problem that runs deeper than cultural trends… deeper than the fraternity/sorority environment that is often complicit in such incidents.… deeper than what education and legislation can counteract.

When it happens, it makes me feel angry… indignant… extra-protective of my own… but not surprised… and not too sanctimonious either:
  • My university days were spent with the "spiritual grandfathers" of some of these dudes.
  • My children, who are now parents, went to school with some people who acted no better.
Collectively, though it may sound harsh, we -parents, grandparents and great grandparents- have reaped what we sowed. Today’s culture is the result of our hard work (or ignorance) that has perpetuated attitudes and mores opposed to God and harmful to those around us.

Things have not changed. They will never change without God.

"The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned."  (1 Co 2:14)

It sounds even better in the old Spanish version: “el hombre animal” (RV1609) - the animal man. The word refers to our physical, sensual side… the side that likes to dominate, use and seek its own satisfaction.

…until a person has come to Christ... regenerated and transformed by the Spirit of God.

Only then, will the need to victimize others diminish. Sexual, verbal and emotional abuse will be supplanted; respect, love, and self-control will emerge. The need to dominate, subjugate and use will fade as appreciation, cooperation, and mutual acceptance come into play.

Back in my day, there was a popular book on the shelves entitled, “The Joy of Sex”. Yes, it is possible. But promiscuity and predatory sex exclude you from that.

There is so much more to it than just acting like an animal.

"Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love."  (Proverbs 5:18-19)
